In order to understand the product marketing industry, it is important to know about the common career progression, what daily responsibilities look like, and which technical skills are necessary.

What is product marketing?

Product marketing is the process of creating and promoting products to consumers. This may include everything from product design and development to pricing, promotion, and analytics. Many companies see product marketing as a collaborative effort between sales and marketing teams, with each group working together to ensure that their products are successful.

Careers in product marketing

If you are interested in product marketing, there are many different career paths that you can pursue. The typical career progression is to start as an entry-level marketing professional, then move up to a product lead or product manager position. This can be followed by promotion to senior product management roles and eventually to leadership positions such as vice president of marketing or chief product officer.

During your career in product marketing, you will typically be responsible for performing a variety of tasks. These can include creating product positioning statements, conducting market research and competitive analysis, working with sales teams to develop sales collateral, planning launch events, and managing product pricing and promotions. Additionally, you will need to have strong communication skills in order to work with both internal teams and external stakeholders such as customers or investors.

Market research analyst:

A market research analyst plays a key role in determining which marketing strategies will be the most effective for a company. In this role, you’re responsible for researching trends in the market and gathering data about target audiences, competitors, and industry developments.

This is generally an entry-level position and builds a strong foundation for a career in product marketing.

Product marketing specialist:

Product marketing specialists focus on details such as pricing or packaging to help promote products to consumers. They may be responsible for creating product marketing materials such as product images, sales sheets, or email campaigns. Additionally, they may work with outside vendors to design and produce promotional packaging, signs, or other marketing collateral.

On average, most product marketing specialists have between three and five years of experience.

Product marketing manager:

A product marketing manager is responsible for creating and executing a marketing plan for a product or service. They work with design teams, engineers, sales teams, and other stakeholders to determine how the product will be marketed and what channels will be used. Additionally, they are responsible for developing pricing and promotional strategies, as well as managing customer relationships.

A marketing manager typically has five to seven years of experience, and the skills that are needed to be successful in this role include strong communication and problem-solving skills, as well as strategic thinking. It is also important to have experience in market research and competitive analysis. Marketing managers should be able to understand complex products and the needs of the market in order to create successful marketing plans.

Director of Product Marketing:

As a director of product marketing, you will be responsible for managing an entire team of professionals within the product marketing department. This may include developing and implementing department policies, leading meetings with internal and external stakeholders, hiring new employees, and mentoring junior staff members. Additionally, you will manage budgets for product-related initiatives, such as campaigns or new product launches.

To be successful in this role, you will need several years of experience as a product marketing manager or senior product marketer, as well as strong leadership skills and project management experience. Additionally, it is important to have a thorough understanding of the industry and the products being marketed.

Day-to-day responsibilities

The common, everyday responsibilities in product marketing typically include market research, strategy development, competitive analysis, and campaign creation.

If you’re just getting started, you will likely begin as a market research analyst or associate.

A market research analyst typically conducts market analysis to understand customer needs and preferences. They may also be responsible for conducting competitive analysis to understand the competition’s strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, market research analysts may be responsible for creating surveys or focus groups to gather feedback from customers. They then use this information to help develop marketing plans and strategies.

As you gain more experience, you may move up to senior market research analyst or product manager roles. With these positions come increased responsibilities, such as coordinating focus groups or analyzing sales data. Additionally, at the senior level of product management, there is an increased emphasis on managing large budgets and acting as a liaison between multiple internal departments like finance, development, and marketing.

Skills and qualifications

To be successful in a product marketing role, you will need to have a mix of both technical and soft skills.

Technical skills include things like proficiency in market research platforms or web analytics tools. You also need strong communication skills, as your job will involve working with different teams, including internal stakeholders and external vendors. Additionally, it is important to be able to understand the needs of customers and the competitive landscape so that you can create targeted marketing campaigns and strategies.

Education requirements typically include an undergraduate degree at minimum, though depending on the specific position, there may be additional requirements. For example, some roles may require experience with coding or database management software. This will all vary based on the product or service being sold – don’t be discouraged if some roles require additional experience you don’t have.
